Valentine's Day is Coming Soon

A Little History

Valentine's Day has been celebrated on February 14th since the time of the Ancient Romans.  This was the date that they honored Juno Februata (also known as Hera), Mother of the other Gods & Goddesses.  It was considered a time of romance because she was considered the Goddess of women & marriage.

On her feast day, single young women wrote their names on billets (slips of paper) & deposited them in a large bowl.  Single young men would choose a billet & thus choose his partner for the day's festivities, which often included erotic activities.  These pairings usually resulted in marriage.

In 494 the Catholic Church, under Pope Gelasius I, renamed the festival as the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary & moved the date to February 2nd.  Pagans revolted, so the Church created it as Valentine's Day, so named after two martyrs named St. Valentine.

A Little Fun

Human Chain

Tie a spoon on the end of a ball of yarn or ribbon.  You'll need two.  Divide your group in half.  Ask each group to line up, and when the hostess says 'go' the person in the front of the line puts the spoon down their shirt & then their pants.  When it comes out their pantleg, they pass the spoon to the next person in line who then puts the spoon UP their pantleg & shirt.  They pass the spoon to the next person in line who puts the spoon DOWN their shirt & pantleg.  Continue until everyone has weaved the yarn through their clothing.  Now it is time to take the spoon OUT of their clothes!  The team who gives the spoon to the hostess first (without clothing attached!) wins.  Believe it or not, all age groups enjoy this game.
